      Tokyo musical typhoon in Košice

      • 19.6.2013 at 10:05

One of the highlights of the year’s musical production during Košice ECOC 2013 will undoubtedly be considered to be the concert by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. The very fact that such an ensemble performed in Košice is an event whose importance hardly anyone realizes, though it is almost certain that getting orchestras of a similar calibre to Košice in the coming years will not be so easy. The Tokyo group arrived after performances at the Prague Spring Festival and Ostrava’s Janáček May in full force, which they decided to showcase at the House of Arts in Košice under the leadership of their residential conductor Kazuhito Koizumi.

A play without words, a mixture of music, visual projections and performance took place on Saturday night in a public space in a courtyard on the Main Street from the Japanese performers. The Original Tempo group pulled a large number of fans who wanted to see a piece of Japanese culture into rainy Košice. Theatrical performances were one of many gems of the USE THE CITY festival in the European Capital of Culture.

“We are free here.” That is to say, in our country. To this end, the protagonists of the Košice Na Peróne Theatre, together with the hosting actors had to work through a number of historical ages, marked by wars, suppression, oppression, exile, censorship and the return to the free homeland, where the artists could create without someone forbidding or decreeing something.

Tape riots in the Košice streets

    • 28.5.2013 at 12:22

Hungarian artists’ experimentation with the forms of musical theatre was fully expressed on Saturday afternoon in the streets of Košice. A crowd of people went for the music. Well known songs performed by the HOPPart theatre company echoed in the City Park, under the old bastion and on Zvonárska street. Without any musical instruments they managed to emulate current hits by Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. They also included Hungarian singles. The icing on the cake was the last song by the Košice band Puding pani Elvisovej – Gramatika (Grammar) which our southern neighbours perfectly imitated.

Kjógenu’s farce gets them laughing, even in Japanese

    • 27.5.2013 at 12:16

In Košice we had a chance to see Japanese farce again after only a short time. Like the first performance, Friday can be summed up in one sentence. It was famous, surprised the eyes, made the ears happy, got the heart beating and amused the audience. The Small Kjógenu Theatre from Brno with its guest – master Motohiko Shigejam, of Kyoto’s professional actor of the traditional school, Okura in the main role and in his native language, presented three farces in the historic town hall: Voice at the Door, Tea Caddy and Large Clothing.
