MUSIC FROM ARCHIVES RESURRECTED IN ST.MICHAEL'S CHAPEL
Project Musica Iuvenalis or Music from archives is an ongoing project to support Košice's candidacy for European Capital of Culture.
The second concert of archival music works titled Duets and Trios consisted of several baroque pieces by Bach, Vivaldi, Haendel, Leclair, Tellemann, d´Astorga, and Rathgeber.
"The Sunday concert in St. Michael's Chapel seeks to revive music, which has never been heard before in Košice, since it remained on paper only in city or private archives, and make it accessible to wide public," mentioned co-organizer of Musica sacra ex archivo , Mr. Viliam Gurbaľ.
Musica sacra ex archivo project fosters revival of archival music pieces, transcription of manuscripts by computer into legible form and their interpretation by professional and capable amateur musicians. Mr. Viliam Gurbaľ conducted the Chamber Orchestra of St.Elisabeth's Cathedral, which performed together with amateur solo singers of St.Cecile's Choir, and organist of St.Elisabeth's Cathedral, Martin Vernarský
Young rescuers of music from archives have so far transcribed eight masses by Haydn and an equal number of Mozart's work, three Stabat Maters by Vivaldi, Pergolesi and d´Astorga, two Requiems by Mozart and Duruflé, three Magnificats by Bach, Durante, Galuppi, along with 36 vocal masses by H.I.F. Biber, several cantatas by Barch and hundreds of a cappella pieces. Majority of transcribed work is yet to be presented in public by an orchestra.
