A native of Košice, Ján Mathé, 20th century’s great figure of sculptural art, will be soon presented to Britons at the Slovak Embassy in London. The exhibition opening starts on 23rd April at 18:30. Visitors can then enjoy the stone treasures for a month.

Juraj Jakubisko opened his exhibition in Košice on Saturday. At the opening he received an award from the Mayor of Košice. He recalled his first nude painting, for which he got a slap from his father. Visitors to the exhibition sometimes used magnifying glass to look at the mysterious pictures.

Excellent American musician and singer Frank McComb, who speaks to his fans the language of soul, jazz and blues, will perform in East Slovakia on 26th February 2013. He is the biggest attraction of this year’s One Day Jazz Festival. Slovakia is constantly experiencing a growing interest in jazz. Therefore, the One Day Jazz Festival organizers decided, in collaboration with the European Capital of Culture 2013, and for the first time in the festival’s history, to present this outstanding instrumentalist and other musicians to Košice, on Tuesday the 26th February 2013 at 7pm in the Historic Town Hall on Hlavná Street (the former cinema Slovan).

Painstaking work during the Opening Ceremony of Košice ECOC 2013, which was often hidden behind the stage or screen, was done by the people who came to help without expecting remuneration. The students of Košice secondary schools and universities, and others became part of the magnificent project that Slovakia has never seen before. These volunteers helped to prepare cultural events because they had a desire to do so.

One Day Jazz Festival first time in Košice

Slovakia is constantly experiencing a growing interest in jazz. Therefore, the One Day Jazz Festival organizers decided, in collaboration with the European Capital of Culture 2013, to bring the festival to East Slovakia for the first time in its history. On 26th February 2013 at 7pm, Košice’s Historic Town Hall will host performances by Frank McComb, Andrej Šeban Band, and jazz trio Depart Refire.

Quasar Ensemble will be resident at the Kasárne/Kulturpark in 2013

During their residency at the Kasárne/Kulturpark, the ensemble will mediate to Košice the top quality of the world’s contemporary music scene. Chamber concerts of the first half of 2013 will be held at the VojtechLöfflerMuseum, and then the concerts will move to the premises of the Cultural Centre after its reconstruction. The residential ensemble intends to create a permanent venue in Košice for a quality performance of chamber music of international standards.
