Kosice 2013 European Capital of Culture is amazed by GuoGuang Opera Company from Taiwan

On Sunday, June 23 2013 evening a crowd started to flow into the State Theatre in Košice. Everybody was eager to see a unique musical performance presented by the GuoGuang Opera Company from Taiwan in Košice this year as a part of their European tour. After successful performances in Poland, Hungary and Denmark, also Slovak people had the chance to see, for the first time ever, the unusual performance of traditional art from far Asia – the Monkey King.

One of the highlights of the year’s musical production during Košice ECOC 2013 will undoubtedly be considered to be the concert by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. The very fact that such an ensemble performed in Košice is an event whose importance hardly anyone realizes, though it is almost certain that getting orchestras of a similar calibre to Košice in the coming years will not be so easy. The Tokyo group arrived after performances at the Prague Spring Festival and Ostrava’s Janáček May in full force, which they decided to showcase at the House of Arts in Košice under the leadership of their residential conductor Kazuhito Koizumi.

In Košice we had a chance to see Japanese farce again after only a short time. Like the first performance, Friday can be summed up in one sentence. It was famous, surprised the eyes, made the ears happy, got the heart beating and amused the audience. The Small Kjógenu Theatre from Brno with its guest – master Motohiko Shigejam, of Kyoto’s professional actor of the traditional school, Okura in the main role and in his native language, presented three farces in the historic town hall: Voice at the Door, Tea Caddy and Large Clothing.

It will be undoubtedly one of the biggest events of this year in the metropolis of the East.

A native of Košice, Ján Mathé, 20th century’s great figure of sculptural art, will be soon presented to Britons at the Slovak Embassy in London. The exhibition opening starts on 23rd April at 18:30. Visitors can then enjoy the stone treasures for a month.
