Breakfast at Pyecka‘s

PYECKA SHOP was founded in 2012 on the initiative of a group of students working with street art activities in Košice. Its premises house a studio, a gallery and a mini-shop with painting supplies used for this type of art. Its founders have been organising for five years now theStreetArt Communication streetart festival, the only one of its kind inSlovakia.

What could be better on a cold January day than to start off the weekend with a croissant and a cup of hot coffee or tea? Breakfast at Pyecka’s provided visitors with this particular kind of morning first aid. The main objective of the meeting, however, was to discuss current problems facing street artists and street art event organisers in Košice. One of the main activities of this nature in the city is the StreetArt Communication festival organised by these enthusiasts since 2008, which is focused each year on a particular space in the city. The presentation was led by the director of the Pyecka shop and main festival organiser, Viktor Fehér. He described the current situation in this branch of cultural life as well as events which are being organised; a discussion followed on positive and negative experience and the problems of street art in Košice. Humorous insights and dialogues were an excellent addition to the informal breakfast. “I am delighted with the opportunity to talk to the people who are behind the artistic drawings on the buildings of our city. As an inhabitant of Košice, I know their work and I see it in a very positive light,” Mária (24), a student, said in praise of the event. Several foreign visitors also came for breakfast, which is why mostly English was spoken. Even though it is young artists who mainly work with street art, Breakfast at Pyecka’s also attracted older visitors. “I don’t understand this type of art, and that’s what brought me here. It’s excellent to turn an unused wall into a piece of art in the middle of a housing estate,” says pensioner Peter (61).  If you missed it, you can watch the video on youtube entitled StreetArt Communication festival.
