Opening ceremony of ECOC 2013 hears international tango adapted by Peter Breiner

The unique TRIANGO project from Peter Breiner returned to Košice to the Historic Town Hall yesterday. As part of the opening ceremony of ECOC 2013, the Slovak trio of top musicians: Peter Breiner (pianist and composer), Stano Paluch (violinist) and Boris Lenko (accordionist) offered their fans a dose of great music. The TRIANGO Project conceals a sparky embrace of the passion of dance-halls in Buenos Aires, as well as jazz improvisation.

Apart from Latin American tango-classics, musical works by Astor Piazzolla, and melodies from Volver, which are known from the film of the same name by Pedro Almodóvar, lovers of temperamental and passionate music could hear Peter Breiner’s own tango compositions. “Most of the songs we played today were different. We try not to play the same thing twice anywhere. Since we were last in Košice, we have recorded a new CD, so here we just wanted to play these new songs,” said Peter Breiner.

Argentine tango brought listeners from all over Slovakia to the Historic Town Hall to enjoy live music. “Great, excellent, and these three virtuosos … something amazing  … I have their CD, but I’ve never seen them live, up here in Košice. We came here for the culture, and really – it was worth it! We also went to the Jewish concert at the Synagogue, for some breakfast with artists, we saw the lighting of the Cathedral and the preparation for the exhibition,” said Igor Kříž  from Bratislava. “Excellent, it was great,” said Juraj Hodas from Žilina. “It was amazing. I love tango and the sweet parts when presented by such great artists – a truly memorable experience, thank you,” said Edita Hajduková from Košice.

Juraj Jakubisko (a well-known Slovak film director) and his wife Deana Horváthová also came to see the concert by the three virtuosos. “I liked this concert, actually for two reasons. As a child I was never able to get into this place for free, when there used to be a cinema. The first time I was actually here was eventually when I screened my first film. Well, and the tango we heard here? You know, these are my friends, I know their work well. In addition, they do their concerts perfectly and make them very interesting from the instrumental point of view. Needless to say, these are tunes that are very good to listen to,”said Juraj Jakubisko.

“It’s good, that something’s going on in Slovakia. I have just returned from Bratislava. And to compare? Košice is a city of culture and Bratislava is a ghost town at the moment. In Košice today I saw people on the streets and in Bratislava? – As if we were in some kind of zombie movie. They are all in the shopping centres and there is no life in the city. So this is at least one way to pump life into a city,” said Peter Breiner of the ECOC 2013 events.

Peter Breiner is a very versatile artist whose musical arrangements are known worldwide. A flexible pianist and composer, born in Humenné, currently lives in New York.
