Every autumn for many decades, Košice has witnessed an event which has gradually become an inherent phenomenon in the life of this historic metropolis. The word ‚marathon‘ has been common here since 1924, when 8 brave souls, inspired by the Olympic marathon in Paris, were sent for a great adventure by the founder of the Košice marathon, Vojtech Bukovský. This marathon, certainly one of the most significant events in Slovakia, may today proudly declare itself to be the oldest in Europe. Worldwide, only the Boston marathon has more records in its chronicle than the marathon in Košice. The Košice marathon is also unique in that since its first year in 1924, they have strictly maintained the standard distance of 42.195km. The city circuit is run by marathon participants twice and has a hard asphalt surface and no significant elevation. Runners in the half-marathon run  one circuit of the city. The race follows the regulations of the IAAF with traffic being excluded. The route has a valid IAAF/AIMS certificate.
