The original name of the piece, PASSIO SECUNDUM JOHANNUM, was composed by Bach for Good Friday in 1724. The work contains recitatives, arias and choruses that last approximately 1.5 hours. The first performance did not take place in Thomaskirche, which was Bach‘s original idea, but in the parish Nikolaikirche. The first part consists of two scenes in the Kidron Valley and in the palace of the high priest Kaiphas. The second has three scenes: Pontius Pilate, Golgatha and at the burial site. The recitatives are literally drawn from the gospel of St. John the Apostle, some poetic texts were selected by the maestro himself and the very popular Brockes-Passion (1712) by Barthold Heinrich Brockes, or Johannes-Passion by Christian Heinrich Postel could also have been his inspiration. Scientists discovered that Bach revised the passions several times until the final version of the work was created in 1740. Each concert of this piece started with the blessing „In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit“. The priest gave a short sermon between the first and second parts. Between „Es ist Vollbracht!“ (Jesus’ death) and „Mein Teuer Heiland“ everybody said the Lord‘s Prayer. At the end, the priest gave Aaron‘s Blessing to everybody. There was no applause. St. Cecilia‘s Choir of the St. Elizabeth‘s Cathedral, Musica Florea Prague and their soloists: Dominika Stráňavská, Júlia Gurbaľová, Markéta Cukrová, František Biroš, Matúš Šimko and Tomáš Král. Conducted by Marek Štryncl.
