The Peter Toperczer International Piano Competition Košice receives a great response from the wide specialist and lay public, promotes the city of Košice and Slovakia abroad and brings massive artistic potential, contacts and friendship to the city. The International Piano Competition Košice (hereinafter IPC) first took place in 1993. The number of participants is approximately 50 – 70 children who compete in two rounds in four age categories – from 6 to 17 years. Their mastery in each category is evaluated by a 10-member jury consisting of significant international personalities in piano interpretation art and piano teachers. So far, children from Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland have participated in the competition, as well as children from countries outside the European Union such as Georgia, Iran, South Korea and China. In 1988, the BAS was accepted as a regular member of the international organisation called EMCY (European Union of Music Competitions for Youth), which significantly increased its credibility on an international scale. Peter Toperczer, Jnr., will become the specialist guarantor and Artistic Director of the IPC from the XIIIth anniversary of the competition.
