A unique festival of street art which brings non-traditional forms of arts to the city’s streets. USE THE CITY FESTIVAL – festival of art in public space has persuaded even the most hard-headed sceptics about its importance and public appeal. Thanks to this festival the city is being perceived as a modern, interesting and vibrating European city.

This festival is an annual profile event of the Košice 2013 project and its goal is to focus on the revitalization of non-central areas of the city. The program is to bring about the most creative ideas in Europe in terms of the arts for uses of public areas and supports the creative works of various individuals, entities, initiatives and civic associations active in Košice and its surroundings. The goal of the festival is to present various forms, genres and types of art in public areas. The program connects presentations of the creations of Slovak and foreign artists and various forms of community activities for the lay public. It challenges the users, therefore the residents of Košice, to use the city, to go out into the streets, to actively join public life and to start communicating with culture and the arts offered by the urban environment. The festival is the contribution of Košice 2013, n.o. into the European IN SITU network for arts in public places.

“I believe that such a festival belongs to Košice. We have a unique opportunity to transcend in this sector. In my opinion, this is the best way to garner a new public for art and to maintain a communication dimension of festivals to directly connect to Košice locals, as we have managed to do during city games, woven graffiti, community theatre, city sports and dance competitions,” Christian Poiron, manager of the Use the City festival.
