Representatives of Košice 2013 n.o. (non-profit organisation) have introduced the project in Tokyo, and agreed on broad cooperation with the Japanese foundation EU-Japan Fest.

The Japanese foundation EU-Japan Fest invited representatives of the towns of Sibiu (2007), Maribor and Guimaraes (2012), Marseille and Košice (2013), Umea and Riga (2014) for an official visit. The main objective of the meeting was the presentation of projects by individual capitals of culture. This was followed by discussions and sessions regarding the pre-negotiated joint projects and cooperation.

“We have agreed on 18 projects of mutual cooperation in the field of culture between Japan and Slovakia, with the direct support from the EU-Japan Fest foundation,” said Jakub Urik, head of department for Development Projects and International Relations. He added that these projects deal with photography, architecture, theatre, dance, residencies, etc.

Since January, Slovak contemporary painter Erik Sille has been on a residential stay at Yukobo Art Space in Tokyo. 20 cultural operators from Eastern Slovakia have been involved in the cooperation with Japan thanks to the project Košice 2013.

Due to great interest of both parties, new projects are being prepared for 2014 to take place in the newly created premises of cultural infrastructure in the city of Košice (Kasárne/Kulturpark, Kunsthalle, SPOTs, and city parks).

On the occasion of the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra performance (on 26th May 2013), Mr. Yorihiko Kojima, President of Mitsubishi Corporation, expressed his interest to visit Košice, who attended the presentation of the City of Košice and of the project Košice 2013 – European Capital of Culture. “This visit may also have a very positive impact on the development of city and the region,” said Urik
