Two generations overlapped in the Kolísky (Cradles) theatre play

A Slovak ensemble of actors from the theatrical Debris Company performed Kolísky in theHistoricTown Hall in Košice on Saturday.

The production from the pen of renowned Slovak dramatist and poet, Jana Bodnárová, first saw the light of the world last autumn under the direction of Jozef Vlk. Its premiere took place in Bratislava. The play is a metaphoric country, full of rough images and contradictions. It consists of several layers which may be interpreted differently. “There was a relationship between a man, a woman and their child which didn’t even appear in the scene. Therefore, the audience had no idea whether the child had already been born or whether it was a fictitious child made up by the woman in order to maintain the relationship. The child symbolised all their arguments,” said Štefan Martinovič, the actor in Kolísky. A mother who lost her child in war also appears in the play. Two generations blended there.

The aim of the director was to create symbols for the actors with which they would be able to express themselves using physical actions and without words, and not only by dance. A lover of theatre plays expressed her excitement: “I was extremely pleasantly surprised. It was such a modern conception. I’m used to a totally different genre, but I adore actors who know how to put everything into it. The idea of the play was nice. It was quite interesting, such a modern conception. I’m glad that we have this event in Košice,” said Judita.
