Origami for White Night in Košice was folded by everybody – children, students, the handicapped, pensioners and even prisoners

Amongst the firsts recorded about this year’s White Night/Nuit Blanche 2013 will also be the participative work by the French artist, Mademoiselle Maurice. It will be made of 30,000 pieces of colourful origami and installed on the wall of the Executioner’s House of Mikluš Prison. Its magic also lies in the fact that the wider public will also participate. This week in Košice schools, dormitories, and children’s clubs as well as in social services homes and prisons, folding of the necessary origami is finishing.

Project Košice 2013 – European Capital of Culture – MRC-oriented activities

The SPOTs project includes a definition of a programme and sub-programme structure, based on which various projects are implemented. One of them is the Sub-programme Social Arts supporting activities aimed at sensitising the public, cooperation of artists with people in disadvantaged communities, and developing new approaches in social and community work. The above programme in 2009–2013 included the implementation of several projects directly in Roma communities, or in collaboration with the Roma community and civic associations, which work in Roma communities on a daily basis. Note: “MRC” stands for “marginalised Roma communities”.

Summer in the Park Festival begins this Saturday

The Summer in the Park Festival has been part of the line up for the summer programme for residents and visitors to Košice for five years. Apart from the strong musical programme, it brings, in the spirit of its multi-genre idea, dramatic performances for children and adults, film shows and literature in a new light. The Kasárne Kulturpark is transformed into a refreshing city-oasis of culture and relaxation for almost a whole month; Summer in the Park will be held from 3 to 25 August.

Košice is gaining a new place and new possibilities for properly presenting contemporary visual art as is the standard in the rest of the world. The Kunsthalle/Hall of Art, known to Košice people as the old swimming pool hall, is one of the most architecturally interesting buildings in the town. It stopped functioning as a swimming pool after structural damage caused by the diversion of the River Hornad, an arm of which had flowed close to the building.
