Invitation to opening the exhibition Claire Waffel (GER) – PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE CEILING
K.A.I.R. Košice Artist in Residence / Košice 2013 n.o. invites you to the final exhibition of our artist Claire Waffel. The opening will be on the 9th of May 2012 at 6 pm, East Slovak Gallery, Košice. The exhibition shows the result of the three-month K.A.I.R. residency of the artist and is supported by the Goethe-Institut, Bratislava. The exhibition PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE CEILING re-frames the theme of past ideologies and their traumatic repression into the forms of architectonic signs that symptomatically appear in culture through the visual repetition in time. In a conceptual manner the artist Claire Waffel who often works with various time structures found as simultaneous or dislocated fragments in a person, landscape or architecture deals with the site of House of Arts in Košice – a Jewish synagogue converted during Communism. She reveals the nature of the covering over of the religious ornamental ceiling from the late 1950´s reconstruction in the Socialist-Realism style as a symbol of cultural amnesia. Uncovering the original synagogue cupola the artist not only makes the sedimental layer visible but by the work in situ that finds the same architectural residues in the recently reconstructed gallery ceiling, she literally lets the sky or the horizon of our perception of the world fall down. This happens in front of the eyes of the post-communist viewer used to the obsessive practice of lowering the ceilings both in public and private spaces since the times of Communism. The story illustrates the changing relationship between topography and identity, a collective identity of Košice post 1989 that instead of opening a discourse on the Holocaust as was expected in post-communist places, strongly adhered to the popular discourse on Central Europe with the idealized version of multiculturalism and the life of minorities. Just a few days before the opening of the exhibition the historians publicly declared the Holocaust in Košice and southern Slovakia that were a part of Hungary during World War Two to be a blind spot. This followed media information that the Simon Wiesenthal Centre announced Laszlo Csatary, a police commander in Košice responsible for the transport of more than 15 000 Jews to be the most wanted living Nazi collaborator in the world. Claire Waffel (1978), a Berlin-based artist studied Media, French and Photography at the universities in Norwich, Université Paul-Valéry in Montpellier and London College of Communication. She works with video, photography and installation examining their potential to transport and reflect a sense of history, time and place. Her pieces range from very personal storytelling pieces to abstract, analytic and minimal installations. For her video piece “Inventory” she won the „Sproxton Memorial Prize”, her work „Close Family” was exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Since 2008 her series “War Veterans” has been a part of the permanent collection of the Imperial War Museum in London. Other exhibitions include amongst others Yaffo 23 and Goethe-Institut in Jerusalem, Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin, Meetfactory in Prague and Kunsthaus Dresden. Ivana Komanická (1973) is art theorist and philosopher with a background in a “radical philosophy” from Middlesex University in London. She is interested in a post-communist situation with the emphasis on the critique of neoliberalism. Her curatorial work includes the exhibition on social inequalities in a contemporary art world “See you there” for the European Cultural Congress in Wroclaw and the exhibition on the transformational processes of home after 1989 “Home edition” at East and Central Slovak Gallery (together with Gabriela Kisová). She teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Košice and is the editor of a Slovak literary journal Romboid. K.A.I.R. Košice Artist in Residence is a programme in the frame of Košice 2013/INTERFACE to invite international artists to Košice and to send artists from Košice abroad.
Exhibition of K.A.I.R.: Monika Drożyńska – Plan
Košice 2013 invites you to the exhibition Monika Drożyńska – Plan to be held on 2nd May 2012 at 18:00. Top of the exhibition is at the intersection of Orlia and Zvonárska Street (next to the horse) in Kosice. The exhibition was realised via residential program K.A.I.R. supported by the International Visegrad Fund.Monika Drożyńska – Plan / Plán Monika Drożyńska’s work in Košice comprises three interventions in public space, which together present a playful comment on – and an inquiry into – this city, the experience of walking through its streets and the nature of current city development in central-eastern Europe in general and in Košice in particular. The playfulness is key here – the interventions derive from an acute power of observation joined with the sharp wit and intelligent and spontaneous humour characteristic of Drożyńska’s work. The pieces arise out of a curiosity about things encountered and a wish to explore them further (and where needed, to make sense of them): a statue of a horse cast in bronze, an interesting room in an unkempt courtyard, the plaster lining the pavements underneath the buildings. The works retain the energy and the spirit of adventure and discovery, of having fun – in this way they not only explore ways of engaging with the city, they themselves are a particular way of engaging with the city, one that is fresh, intelligent, bitingly ironic and witty, and at the same time extremely serious. Each of the pieces brings out a different aspect of this engagement – be it the dry, matter-of-fact juxtaposition of a statue of a horse with a quote suddenly remembered (Rider), or the sense of magic and childhood wonder present in peering through a dusty window into a space newly discovered (Diamond house). These two pieces are complemented by a third one, Stretch marks, which highlights the subversive and critical element of this aliveness. The piece draws on observations about the transformations Košice is currently undergoing (of its own accord as well as in connection to institutional projects such as the European Capital of Culture) and the role of institutions in this change. Taken together, the pieces highlight the subversive side of playfulness and the playful side of subversiveness. With the elegance of a joke well delivered, these works leave it to us how we piece things together. Monika Drożyńska (1979) lives and works in Krakow. She is a visual artist, designer, performer, author of installations and projects in public space. Her work has been exhibited in solo and collective shows in Poland and internationally (including Zachęta National Art Gallery, the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdansk, the National Museum in Krakow, Bunkier Sztuki in Krakow, the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, and others). The contract about finances for investment projects was signed today
Today (9. 3. 2011), within the halls of the Ministry of Culture SR, contracts were signed regarding the provision of a non-returnable financial subsidy within Priority Axis 7 of the Regional Operational Programme for implementation of projects related to the European Capital of Culture – Košice 2013 project. The additionally created priority axis creates conditions for the implementation of projects of an investment nature, such as renovation, reconstruction, extension and modernisation of buildings in order for them to be used for cultural-social purposes, the development of culture, arts and cultural-educational tourism, and related procurement of equipment, adaptation and revitalisation of public areas, small architectural elements, public green areas, and reconstruction and completion of the local traffic infrastructure functionally related to the ECOC Košice 2013 project. Contracts were signed by the Minister of Culture, Daniel Krajcer, as the statutory representative of the Intermediary Body for Priority Axis 7 of the Regional Operational Programme, which is MC SR, and on behalf of the recipients, the Mayor of Košice, Richard Raši, Zdenko Trebuľa as Chairman of Košice Self-Governing Region, František Šándor for Perly Gotickej Cesty n.o (Pearls of the Gothic Route non-profit making organisation), and Marek Kažimír on behalf of Zachráňme Kaštieľ v Krásnej (Save the Manor in Krásna) non-profit making organisation. To date, the Ministry of Culture SR has taken all the necessary steps to implement investment projects related to the European Capital of Culture – Košice 2013 project, focusing upon creating the necessary cultural infrastructure via Priority Axis 7, in which a maximum of 60 million EUR has been allocated for the given purpose (sources EU/ERDF). The Ministry of Culture views this project as a unique opportunity to enliven the cultural sphere, to present culture and to offer the widest possible spectra of cultural experiences, not only throughout 2013, but also by permanent development of cultural elements as means of identification, presentation and pleasant experiences for the public. Furthermore, we send East Slovakian based artists abroad for residencies to our partner organisations in Germany, France, Ukraine and Moldova. As many as 72% of Slovaks know that Košice will be the European Capital of Culture in 2013
The fact that Košice will become the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) in 2013 was known by 72% of people that took part in a survey in December 2011 during a tour of Slovak cities (Bratislava, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov and Košice) – KULTOUR 2013, carried out by Košice 2013 non-profit making organisation. The best source of information is television, online newspapers and the internet. The most popular event in the ECOC portfolio has become the White Nights/Nuit Blanche event. • As many as 92% of people believe that 2013 will bring more quality European events and festivals to Košice and almost 80% think that Košice will definitely receive many more visitors, and that Košice will improve their image in Slovakia and put themselves on the map of Europe.• The level of knowledge about the new events offered by Košice 2013 was also a surprise. After the world famous International Peace Marathon (75%), the most popular events organised in Košice are the untraditional street festival of contemporary art, White Night (37%), and the multi-genre Summer in the Park city festival (35%), and almost 25% of respondents know about the Use The City arts festival in public areas. • Thanks to these unique events, almost 68% of those asked would not hesitate in coming to Košice. • More than 75% of survey participants are interested in information about the project as well as invitations to attractive events in Košice.During the survey, volunteers questioned 1050 respondents from which 54% were aged 15 – 35 years, 30% were between 36 – 55 years and 16% said they were 55 years old and over. Twelve survey participants were rewarded, with six receiving collections of Sándor Márai’s books published by Kalligram and six lucky participants receiving free tickets for two persons to events organised by Košice 2013 n.o. Košice 2013 is headed out on tour, seeking to bring Slovaks closer to the European Capital of Culture project
Košice, the European Capital of Culture 2013, is headed out on tour to Bratislava accompanied by a non-traditional, multi-functional mobile podium on wheels – KULTOUR 2013. The Košice 2013 team will kick off the program in the capital on 13 December at 4:00 PM at Primaciálne námestie (Primate’s Square). The tour going forward will include visits to the following city centres: Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov and Košice. The organizers want to use this unconventional format and accompanying program to bring the project closer to all the residents of Slovakia. KULTOUR 2013 visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the Košice 2013 project, its aims and goals, completed and planned activities; they will also compete for valuable prizes and have the ability to express their opinions regarding the project. The program will be moderated by Stano Bilý and Števo Hric. “The Na Peróne Theatre will present its unconventional street performance ‘Frame’. Children will have fun with our animators and will be able to paint and draw in the style of Andy Warhol and others. A symbolic blackboard will be set up for visitors to write their suggestions for Košice, our team and many others, of course depending on the public’s mood and the weather,” said Jozef Môcik, manager of the KULTOUR 2013 project, with regards to the program. “A research questionnaire will also be a part of the Slovak tour. We are interested to see if people in Slovakia are aware of the project, what they know about it and what they expect from it. Those who also provide contact information will be entered into a drawing for a collection of books written by Sándor Márai. The prize will be books published by Kalligram, which is publishing the complete works of this famous Košice native in Slovak,” added Zuzana Lehotská from the Košice 2013 communication department.One participant from the research questionnaire will be selected from every city at the end of the tour on 19 December in Košice at 4:00 PM. The mobile set up features all the necessary equipment for presentations and is used to control the area once unpacked. This configuration should allow it to stage dozens of appearances during the year and to help a larger overall audience get to know the KOŠICE 2013 project in a scope that exceeds our expectations,” stated the architect who designed the mobile KULTOUR 2013 concept, Martin Schaller. The CREATIVE FACTORY story continues after inspiration from Budapest
The Palace of Wonders in Buda, part of the capital of Hungary, has become the next stone in the mosaic of the Creative Factory project. It will be placed in the City Exhibition Center in the Barracks/Culturpark grounds. This will be reconstructed as part of the Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 project. U. S. Steel Kosice organized a visit to the Palace of Wonders in Budapest on November 16th for experts from the Technical University and Institute of Experimental Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences, who together with scientists from Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Kosice will be the leading creators of the Creative Factory exhibition. Science toys and interactive attractions have already fascinated children and adults in the former factory building for fifteen years. On average 200 000 curious visitors come to see it each year from all over Hungary and abroad. The Palace of Wonders has become fully self-financing, as its entire operation is financed from entry fees. Although the City of Košice is not comparable with Budapest in its size and population, the developers of the Creative Factory exhibition in Culturpark have calculated that if about 45 000 visitors visit it yearly, the Creative Factory will be economically successful as well as that in the metropolis of our southern neighbors. The main organizer of the exhibition – U. S. Steel Košice – has set up a team of co-workers, who started these days to work on achieving the main objective of Creative Factory: Increasing the interest of children and young people in technical sciences through practical experience and retelling about the dominant story of steel. Steel because it is the main product of the largest manufacturing plant not only in Kosice but also in eastern Slovakia. The story of steel, from the location of the deposits of iron ore in the country to its multiple opportunities to present illustrative recycling, will be presented in an engaging way with help of the latest technologies, so that visitors to the Creative Factory find out more about steel and its uses than they could in the real operation.U. S. Steel Košice prepared for the 15 registered participants a full-day excursion at production facilities of the complete metallurgical cycle on December 2nd. Coalition 2013+ members significantly support the Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 project
Two founding Coalition 2013+ members – U. S. Steel Košice, s. r. o. and Východoslovenská energetika, a. s. (Coalition 2013+ is the legal entities interest group) significantly support with their activities the Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 project. David J. Rintoul, President of U. S. Steel Košice and Richard Raši, Mayor of the City of Košice, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. They agree on implementation of the Creative Factory project in one of the buildings in the Barracks/Culturpark grounds. This will be reconstructed as part of the Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 project. The City of Košice undertakes in the memorandum to give the reconstructed building of the future City Exhibition Center in the Culturpark for installation of the Creative Factory project. This non-commercial undertaking will consist of technological installations designed to inspire children and young people to take a deeper interest in science, technology and engineering in a playful and interesting way, and to familiarize them with the different technological branches. The company U. S. Steel Košice will arrange construction of exhibits and coordinate their installation in the Creative Factory. Východoslovenská energetika Košice (VSE), member of the RWE Energy Group, has agreed with the management of the Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 project team on its contribution to the success of the project and its activities, by ensuring effective cooperation with Professor Oliver Scheytt from Essen, who has valuable experience in managing the successful project of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. Artist Residencies for Visual Artists in New York

Košice A.I.R.: Moldova through the eyes of Michal Holy
Michal Holy is in Chisinau since September 9, 2011, where he takes part in KIOSK artist in residency program. During this period he has established a relation with Chisinau urban space, crossing it on the bicycle and by feet, looking for common for his native city of Kosice features.The communist past that Republic of Moldova went through and soviet urbanist plans developed for major cities made him search and explore subjects related to the socialist past of Slovakia. On the other hand the process of globalization that determines the way Kosice is being developed is equally important as the effects of transition that Chisinau is facing today.During his residency Michal Holy has been documenting with the means of photography the streets of Chisinau, places overloaded with outdoor publicity, structures and supports for billboards along with the pedestals supporting monuments that were erected in different historical periods. Košice 2013, n.o. offers three-month residency in Kosice (Slovakia)
K.A.I.R. – Košice Artist in Residence Host organisation: Kosice 2013 – European Capital of Culture (www.kair.kosice2013.sk) Kosice By now, Košice and whole Eastern Slovakia is one of the most fascinating regions in Europe. Not for nothing, Košice awarded the title “Eurpean Capital of Culture 2013″. During the last centuries, the whole region was influenced by many different kingdoms, countries and cultural groups and still you can feel this multicultural spirit in the city, also because of the huge Hungarian and Roma minorities and the three universities. During the socialistic time, Košice became a center of steel industry, the population tripled within 30 years. The influence of the former socialistic times, especially in architecture and working infrastructure, still exists. During the last years, Košice, located at the Schengen border, starts a huge transformation process and will become an important cultural hub between east and west in social, political and artistic terms. Artist in Residence In the frame of European Capital of Culture the NGO Košice 2013 is running an international Artist-in-Residence-program for emerging artists from all over the world and out of all artistic disciplines and expressions. We give our residents the possibility to become a cultural pioneer and work in the inspire environment of Košice`s singular cultural surrounding to realize art projects, collaborate with the agile local art scene and present themself to the local and national public. We pursuit three main goals within the residency program:1. Support the creative energy of every invited artist and give her/him the chance to work in a new and special environment to find (new) artistic ways to express.2. Stimulate the art scene in Košice, in the region and in whole Slowakia. Support the dialogue as well as the confrontation of the residency artists with local artists and the wide public.3. Create/strengthen a beneficial environment for the development of inovative and international contemporary art projects with international and local participants. According to our main goals, our team will introduce every artist in the social environment of the city and the region and help them to build up networks and collaporations with local artists. We will organise public events like artist talks, projections, workshops, open studios to give every artist the chance to introduce and present themself to a wide puplic. A final project/exhibition will show the working process during the stay of each artist. The City of Košice and U. S. Steel Košice have signed a memorandum about the Creative Factory project
Mayor of Košice Richard Raši and President of U. S. Steel Košice David J. Rintoul signed a Memorandum of Understanding on November 10, 2011. They agreed on realization of the Creative Factory project in one of the buildings in the Barracks/Culturpark grounds. It will be reconstructed as part of the Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 project. The City of Košice undertakes in the memorandum to give the reconstructed building of the future City Exhibition Center in the Culturpark for placement of the Creative Factory project. This non-commercial project will consist of technological installations designed to inspire children and young people to take a deeper interest in science, technology and engineering in a playful and interesting way, and to familiarize them with the different technological branches. The company U. S. Steel Košice will coordinate the installation of exhibits in the Creative Factory. Coalition 2013+ members, the City of Košice and U. S.
