Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 starting a tour of Slovak cities
An untraditional multifunctional stand on wheels – KULTOUR 2013 – will visit five Slovak cities and will introduce the project of the future European Capital of Culture (ECOC) via a unique presentation and programme. From 13th to 16th December 2011, they will gradually visit four Slovak cities (Bratislava, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov). Starting in Bratislava (13th december) and finishing its route in Košice (16th december), where the programme will culminate in an exhibition of ice sculptures. For this occasion, the ECOC team is currently seeking two part time employees. The ambition of the KULTOUR 2013 project, an untraditional multifunctional stand on wheels, is to create a unique information and marketing tool which, as an independent, mobile unit, will provide the basis for open air presentations, art works or interactive communication with visitors based on games and new technology. The project will become the unique representative of the Slovak ECOC 2013 at selected large cultural, sports and social events in Slovakia. “We need to extend the team which will travel with the stand to include two part time employees to provide supporting activities in each of the cities visited. We are looking for two students. We require them to be communicative, of a pleasant disposition and be willing to be a little chilly for a while in some of the squares,” said KULTOUR project manager, Jozef Môcik from Košice 2013, n.o. The non-profit making organisation is offering intensive work for one week in a unique team, an unforgettable experience and financial reward upon agreement. Those interested should apply by 20th November 2011 to the following email address: jozef.mocik@kosice2013.sk. Project partners are: Ministry of Culture SR, City of Košice, Košice – Tourism, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov, Bratislava and others. About the KULTOUR 2013 project The design of the KULTOUR 2013 mobile stand is the result of the creative work of the architect, designers, graphic designers, performers and marketing experts. The basis for presentation will be a stand on wheels with an untraditional and functional design as well as a many options for use and mobility which will indirectly refer to one of the main ECOC themes – creative industry.
Kosice: Shock and ore!
Hot on the heels of Slovakia’s capital, Bratislavia, is the republic’s second city Kosice; a city that is finally emerging from the shadows to be named Capital of Culture for 2013. The city’s famous singing fountains are at the epicentre of Kosice’s wonderful medieval old town on Main Street, just across from its once bustling […]
City wards are also parts of the Košice – ECOC 2013 project
The City of Košice is one of the seven founding Coalition 2013+ members. The new management of the non-profit organization Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 has realized the fact that the city is made up of 22 city wards, and it organized a meeting with the leaders of Košice city wards at the beginning of October. They were – according to their words – pleasantly surprised by the invitation to the negotiating table. Twelve leaders of Košice city wards finally accepted this invitation, who discussed with the Executive Director of Košice – ECOC 2013 Ján Sudzina, the Art Director Vladimir Beskid and the SPOT-s project manager for community development Blanka Berkyová. “We are not a super agency that will provide all the cultural events and projects in the City of Košice in framework of the project Košice – ECOC 2013. We see our position in their coordination and this also applies to Kosice city wards. We can help methodically to ensure cultural venues, organized by city wards, for example in the process of seeking funds from grant programs. We have experts ready to cooperate in projects creating and preparing applications for their funding from the grant scheme, ” J. Sudzina said at the meeting. V. Beskid asked the leaders of city wards to promote events within the project Košice – ECOC 2013 in city wards periodicals. Several leaders responded immediately. They will gladly publish articles about Košice – ECOC 2013 in the city wards periodicals. “We are interested in what will happen in the city wards in 2012 and 2013 and what events would be appropriate to include in Košice – ECOC 2013,” said V. Beskid. The Leader of City Ward Košice – Šaca Rudolf Reštei responded by quoting his experience with the former management of the non-profit organization Košice – ECOC 2013. He said, although it requested documents on cultural events in city wards two or three years ago, “up to now I haven´t felt the relationship between Košice – ECOC 2013 project team and Košice city wards. We will appreciate it if the new management decides to move closer to people through the city wards.” Both sides agreed that the first meeting was the beginning of dialogue. If it is constructive, it will become an important part of Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 future success. Source: www.kosice2013.eu
Košice has much to offer from its art and culture
The new non-profit organization Košice – ECOC 2013 management continued in opening up dialogue with the Košice community in early October. Executive Director Ján Sudzina and Art Director Vladimir Beskid met with cultural operators – with the representatives of stone cultural institutions and civic society organizations active in culture and the arts. Twelve representatives of Košice culture accepted an invitation and the Coalition 2013+ members also took part in this meeting. There were representatives from State Theatre Košice, State Philharmonic Orchestra Kosice, CREATV and City TV Foundation. “We want to draw up the program so that we find places in it for all genres and for all who have something to offer. By the end of November we plan together with you to define key cultural events and major events for 2012 and 2013 and set up processes to ensure the development of cultural backgrounds in Košice after 2013, ” said V. Beskid at the outset of the meeting. State Theatre director Peter Himič praised the new ECOC 2013 management for starting talking about what Košice arts and culture may show abroad. He criticized that the scheduled events leave literature wholly absent. “I am also very glad that you are thinking about exporting Košice culture and not about importing Bratislava culture to Košice, as before,” said Július Klein of the State Philharmonic. Eva Děkanovská from City TV Foundation pointed out that Košice has a great deal to offer. For example, the local television festival is unique in the world. TV Naša has been very successful working with partner organizations in Marseille, which is European Capital of Culture the same as Košice in 2013. Source: www.koalicia2013.eu

Speech of president Coalition 2013+
Dear Members of Coalition 2013+ For the current management of the City of Košice and the new management of the ECOC 2013, the Coalition 2013 members are valued partners with whom we are keen to cooperate and communicate. Our aim is for you to play an active role from the start. We all know well that from August 2010 when this organisation was established, Coalition 2013+ was not seen as attractive as it should have been for the previous ECOC project team. The previous team’s main focus was limited to funding only cultural events. Communication stagnated, members of the Coalition were not getting the necessary information and they didn’t have adequate opportunity to help with the ECOC project. I can say that the barrier that continued over the last three years between the ECOC project team and the community of Košice, misunderstandings and not involving the citizens of Košice in the project, was a strong reason for the change in the ECOC management team. I therefore believe that the personnel changes we made were correct and came at the right time. The new management are not only willing but also knowledgeable. The new team communicates with stakeholders, working and pursuing the philosophy of the project and it’s long-term vision. I am convinced that this team knows exactly where it’s going and why. I also know that considering some of the articles in local newspapers you may see things differently. Activities that are a part of the project haven’t been professionally and actively communicated so far. By the end of September we will have the results of a representative opinion poll. This will form the basis of a professionally planned marketing strategy. Incidentally a Coalition 2013+ member OneClick has been involved in preparing and carrying out this research. Surely we have begun a new stage of operation for the ECOC project team and I am convinced that this is also new phase of the operation for Coalition 2013+. This is based on the fact that the Coalition 2013+ members will receive continuously updated information in the required form of the preparations of for investment and programme design, as well as specific proposals on how to get actively involved in the preparation and implementation of the project. We know that a year ago at the inception of Coalition 2013+, it should have been taken as a full partner of ECOC 2013. The Coalition has clearly defined objectives, tasks and ideas itemised in its establishing contract. Founding members, figuratively speaking, offered a helping hand but it was not taken. The City of Košice, the Košice Self-Governing Region (KSGR) and the ECOC 2013 team are currently considering particulars, designs and ideas. In my opinion, from the point of view of effective cooperation with the Coalition, in terms of its relationship with these above three bodies, the important thing is that there are specific opportunities for them to contribute. And now I go back a year. When setting up the association, the objectives of it activities were clearly defined; to support and reach as successful conclusion to ECOC 2013 and also the long term success of ECOC 2013, guaranteeing continuity for the community. Apart from this objective other activities were also clearly defined, activities that should help us reach our main objective. There are available opportunities and specific proposals on how they can be reached and I believe that Coalition 2013+ will meet these specific goals. For example, one of the mentioned activities was to provide expert assistance in the project. There are defined specific positions in the project that could and should be staffed by professionals recommended by the Coalition in 2013+ members. I would like to mention a few: A budgeting specialist with a focus on public procurement A specialist for the creation of proposals and technical IT solutions A specialist from VSE – Group, who could advise us when submitting technical solutions. The project team ECOC 2013 is keen on drawing up a working group of specialists in communications, public relations and marketing, which will be nominated by the the Coalition 2013+ members. This working group would help the ECOC 2013 team to effectively communicate the project both internally and externally. Another working group, again composed of experts from Coalition 2013+ members, would be very helpful when creating the programme structure and its specifications where we can find links between events and actions which are part of the marketing strategies of the Coalition members. The Coalition 2013+ may begin to fulfil all the goals,on which it was founded a year ago. It can actively participate in a unique project, the like of which has never been in Košice before. The new ECOC 2013 project team is ready and has the full support and confidence of the City of Košice management. The ECOC 2013 project team is well worth your trust and and is prepared to do everything necessary to secure your trust. We all have an interest in the success of Košice – ECOC 2013. No doubt about that. I think we are on the right road to being certain that the Coalition 2013+ is seen as being important and necessary to the City of Košice and the success of ECOC 2013. Richard RAŠI Mayor of Košice President of the Coalition 2013+

SHAPING THE NEW: Ludwig Henne: Kosice are interesting and inspiring
Kosice project A.I.R. already has to his credit a number of artists residencies and the results of their operations. Ludwig Henne, the project coordinator, presented to the public soon at an international conference on art residences SHAPING THE NEW, 27 – 29 June in the Kasárne/ Kulturpark in Košice. Ludwig Henne studied cultural sciences with a focus on cultural management and more than ten years he worked in several cultural organizations in Germany as a cultural manager. In Košice, operating in the non-profit organization the Košice 2013, where he had a year of work on the visibility of the artistic capital of Eastern Europe map, as a city open to young beginning artists, creativity and good ideas. What does it mean Shaping the new? With this project, we want to discuss the ideas and sense of residencies. We want to find out, what residencies bring to the artist, to the artistic work and to the social environment of the city. We want to learn more about the process of shaping new surroundings by artists during a residency. So, the name comes from the processes, which happen during the residencies. Is ample opportunities for artistic residencies? Yes, there a many possibilities for foreign artists to explore in Kosice. Just have a look to the history of Kosice with his different influences for so many centuries. Still today, you can see all this influences in the city. Kosice is a multicultural city at the Schengen border with Hungarian, Roma,German and Ukraine minorities. As well the younger history of the city is very interesting and inspiring with his strong and important art scene in the 1920´s, the massive changes at the socialist times and now the beginning of an development to an cultural hub between Eastern and Western Europe. What should be the result of a residential stay in the Shaping the new project? We want to start a general discussion about residencies in the 21st century. The results of the Shaping the NEW residency should show the needs, problems and possibilities of residencies in the participating cities/countries. The artist work, which will be the result of the residencies, will be shown in an exhibition in Kasarne Kulturpark and will reflect the processes of the residency of each participating artist. Through the artwork, the artists show us their artistic development during the residencies and their needs within such a program. Shaping the new is just one of the projects Košice A.I.R. How it should work in the future? Each year, we plan to invite around eight artists to stay and work in Košice for at least three month. The international artists will be selected by a jury. Every resident artist will be involved in the social environment of our city. We want them to start cooperation’s with the local artists and work together with several local cultural organizations. We want them to work within and with the city, taking the several specialties of the city for their artistic work. The main aim of the residency project is to support the freedom of artist, to bring international artists to Kosice and to support collaborations between local and international artists. On the other hand, we will send Košice-based artist to residencies abroad. In 2011, we will have artist exchanges with partners in Chisinau (Moldova), Maribor (Slovenia) and we will send one artist to Leipzig (Germany). For 2012, we planning as well an artist exchange with the art gallery of Kharkov (Ukraine). How did the selection of residents? On the one hand, we will do open calls. This open call is free to every young emerging artist worldwide. The artist will be selected by a Košice 2013 jury. On the other hand, we work together with several partner residencies in Europe to do exchange of artists. With these two models, we want to give a possibility to all artists worldwide to apply for our residency program, but also to build and strengthen partnerships of international networks of cultural operators. What is the main task of the artist residency? In the frame of “European Capital of Culture”, we developing an international artist-in-residency-program for ermerging artists from all over the world and out of all artistic disciplines and expressions. We want togive them the possibility to become a cultural pioneer and work in the inspire environment of Kosice`s singular cultural surrounding to realize art projects, collaborate with the agile local art scene and present themselves to the local and national public. For K.A.I.R., we pursuit three main goals: 1. Support the creative energy of every invited artist and give him/her the chance to work in a new and very special environment to find (new) artistic ways to express. 2. Stimulate the art scene in Kosice, in the region and in whole Slovakia. Support the dialogue as well as the confrontation of the residency-artists with local artists and the wide public. 3. Create/strengthen a beneficial environment for the development of innovative and international contemporary art projects with international and local participants. Shaping the new conclusion will consist of an international conference at which it will seek an ideal model for artists residencies? The discussions will contribute to this non-profit organization Košice 2013? There is no ideal model of a residency. Or better to say, there are several different models of a good residency. We want to find out, which developments of residencies and artist mobility happened in the last years and what will be the development of the next years. We want to learn more about the residency programs in different countries and their different needs. The results of the discussion will be very useful for the further implementation of K.A.I.R. – Kosice artist in residence. We will use the results of discussion directly for our residency program to learn about the needs of the artists and the social environment concerning residencies. How would look washed your ideal model for an artist residences? My ideal residency for Košice is a program, which invites artists from all over the world, who work here for three month, get in touch with the local people and get influence by the specialty of the city. By the end of the residency, there should be an exhibition or artistic work, which reflects the residency of the artist in Košice. The most important point for me is the exchange, discussion and collaboration between the residency and the people of the city. What is your experience with residency abroad? I worked for more than three years for a residency program in Leipzig. The program called blumen and invites international artists to Leipzig to live and work in the city. During my work in Leipzig, I had several contacts to cultural operators and residencies in Germany and Western Europe. Since I´m working in Košice, I visited or stay in contact with Eastern Europe residencies, like Warsaw and Prague and learn more about the special situation and needs of residency programs in Eastern Europe countries. This different experiences, I will use for the development of the residency here in Košice. What we can within the three-day conference program enjoy? The program brings a lot of international cultural manager and artists together. We will discuss artist mobility and residencies in the 21st century. The conference gives a unique chance to interested people in Kosice to learn more about cultural work in different countries. As well, the conference will show a interesting developing city to our international guest. We will show them a place, which will become a cultural hub between East and West. Beside the conference, we will have the opening of the exhibition Shaping the NEW with five artists from five different countries (27tho f June / 7 pm) and a international PECHA KUCHA event (28th of June / 8.20 pm). SHAPING THE NEW: Video from Balász Kovács of his residence in Brno
“Košice2013 asked me to answer for several questions about my Brno / Shaping the New residency in video message. I made this video.* The first part is a fake translation about czech people, from an originally slovak text about the hungarians. * The second part is a pessimistic monologue about Hungary in the comparison of Brno. * The third part is a scene which i find representative for Czech. i recorded it in Brno, on the Tvrdeho street.People see the things from outside everytime colorful. I do it also in this video from my black/white point of view.” Kovács Balász Video from Kovács Balász About Shaping the NEW 27th – 29th of June 2011 Kasárne Kulturpark, Košice, Slovakia International conference about the impact of residencies on artwork and the social environment. SHAPING THE NEW: Do not forget Kosice, refers Moldovan artist (+ video)
Moldovan artist Ghenadie Popescu worked on the project SHAPING THE NEW (April-May 2011) in Hungary. In his artistic work reflects the struggle against totalitarianism, oppression and social differences. Inspiration for a theme found in Hungary. The results will be part of an exhibition SHAPING THE NEW (June 27 to 29 in the Kasárne/ Kulturpark in Košice). Video: I´M HAPPY Performance by Ghenadie Popescu, at Árkád Shopping Center Pécs, Hungary, May 23rd, 2011. Video: DON´T FORGET KOŠICE Animation made by Ghenadie Popescu during his 2 months artist residency in Pécs, Hungary in the frame of the project “Shaping the NEW”. (April, May 2011) About Ghenadie Popescu Ghenadie Popescu lives and works in Chisinau. During the 90’s the artist performed several actions – bicycle trips, that in the former context of post-soviet Moldova should be perceived as acts of personal will with a strong potential. Today Popescu works as an artist building his discourse with the help of images, objects and texts. Full of irony, his works question the ambiguous space continuously reshaped by the new realities of the reborn state lost in between two different ideological systems.
